At Saint Mary's College, we are continually developing and honing our campus-wide "collaboratory" built on a high-speed, standards-based infrastructure. This infrastructure enables our students, faculty, staff, and alumnae to work more effectively and efficiently, communicate and collaborate in ways which enhance the community and relationships that currently exist, and explore new avenues of teaching, learning, and relationship building.

Click here to view a few of our technology clusters and collaboratories.

Additionally, the Department of Information Technology offers many services to the campus community to enhance and support users' technology experience such as ResNet, HelpDesk and the Campus iStore, the Saint Mary's College computer and cellular service center.

Infrastructure

We have designed and installed a high-speed data and cable television network that reaches to all parts of the campus. The campus network connects faculty computers, classrooms, administrative offices as well as our residence halls with one network connection per room occupant ("one port per pillow"). This means that each student has their own high-speed connection to the campus network and Internet. The systems in place now support the delivery of voice, data, and cable television. Students who bring a computer and/or television to campus will never have to go without information about the world around them.

Our systems have been recently redesigned and updated with the latest in web-based electronic mail, enterprise calendaring, course management (Blackboard) and administrative software. Our server systems are enterprise-class Sun Microsystems and Microsoft Windows Server systems providing our campus with the most reliable service available today.

Services

An integrated suite of services facilitate and enhance teaching, learning and College business processes. Services include: network and workstation management, license-managed application services, institutional network filespace, electronic mail, course management and personal web accounts for both academic and administrative purposes, and a "single sign-on" for these services. These services are based on open standards and the most robust network protocols. Our administrative system is one of the best available (SCT Banner) and students, faculty and staff can access it to stay informed with grades, personal information and surveys.

Our ResNet (our student residence data network) services to students are possibly some of the best in the country. Our student "Residential Computer Consultants" live in the residence halls they serve providing service that is literally "just down the hall". Our communications policies now provide information on network upgrades, outages and issues on a near immediate basis to students having problems.

Telecommunications is yet another area where we excel. Our new NEC NEAX IPX 2400 digital telephone system gives our students standard telephone service as well as personal voicemail and electronic billing. On-campus support through our HelpDesk and on-campus maintenance staff provide our campus community with the best in telephone features and service.

BelleAire Wireless Network Access
and more!

Wireless network access is now available across campus via our new "BelleAire" wireless network. Find out more about wireless coverage by clicking here.

We have also enabled access to Saint Mary's services for students, faculty and staff so they can "get back home" when working off-campus. We are also improving dial-in services by increasing the number of modems available and the speed of these modems.

Finally, students will be able to access the network in our new CyberCafe, opening Spring 2005 inside our new Student Center. Computers will be available at the cafe as well as wireless access for campus users who wish to use their own computer while sitting down with a hot cup of coffee.

Support

We are continually boosting the level of support available to technology users at Saint Mary's College. While existing IT staff support the "collaboratory" of our campus computing structure, we are also working with students, faculty and staff to increase the level of awareness and support of technnology at Saint Mary's College. Through on-going departmental training and student/faculty technology training through the new Huisking Instructional Technology Resource Center, our campus community not only has access to the newest technology but the knowledge to use it to its fullest potential in their lives inside and outside the classroom.

To aid the College community in their purchase of computers, software, peripherals and cellular service, we have created "The Campus iStore", our computer and cellular sales center operated by the Department of Information Technology. Because we understand how difficult it is to purchase a computer and necessary software, the Campus iStore allows students, their parents, faculty, staff and our alumnae to purchase computers, software and peripherals at special contract educational prices. Don't purchase a computer, software or printer until you have visited the iStore! IT iStore staff are available at each summer new student orientation day and throughout the academic year to help you in your purchase.

Saint Mary's College Information Technology endorses Toshiba, Apple, MPC (formerly Micron) and Microsoft as premier vendors and offers special educational pricing to our students, their parents, faculty and staff through the Campus iStore. GovConnection is also now a premier partner with the Campus iStore offering our academic community a wide variety of educationally priced computers, software and peripherals.

Click here to visit the Campus iStore web site, email us at istore@saintmarys.edu or call us on-campus at (574) 284-4466. The Campus iStore is an exclusive, College-owned educational reseller serving the students, faculty, staff and families of Saint Mary's College.
