Alumna comments: The Med School, where I am an Instructor and have worked as a Laboratory Research Assistant and Manager for over 30 years, has a terrific Molecular and Cellualr Biology Graduate Program, as well as offering an outstanding MD/PhD program and MPH (Public Health) degree.

I suggest DMS, as well as the College as a whole, to alumnae as both a first rate graduate school, but particularly as a job opportunity in the health field to work in basic, clinical, or applied medical and scientific research. We are the most rural of all US Medical Schools, in the small Northern NH town of Hanover, yet the caliber of research studies is nationally known.

This is a wonderful profession usually allowing incredible challenge, flexibility in time, as well as involvement and professional growth. Ohio Legislative Service Commission http://www.lsc.state.oh.us/internship/index.html
Alumna source: Lisa Baumann Musielewicz '95
Alumna's comments: My employer, the Ohio Legislative Service Commission, offers a year-long internship for college graduates who are interested in "getting a taste" of legislative/public policy work. While the internship is paid, I know the salary is not spectacular. However, the internship often helps participants land jobs as legislative aides for the Ohio General Assembly or Ohio Governor, as legislative liaisons for various state agencies, as lobbyists, or in the federal government. Here is the information from the Commission's website about the internship program:

The Ohio General Assembly, through the Ohio Legislative Service Commission (LSC), has sponsored a legislative internship program for nearly forty years. The LSC sponsors 20-plus paid thirteen-month legislative internships designed to provide college graduates with practical experience in the legislative process. This experience often leads to permanent employment opportunities in the legislature, state government, or related areas.

Traditionally, twenty interns are assigned to work with the majority or minority party caucus in either the House or the Senate, with additional interns being placed with the LSC research staff and the Ohio Government Telecommunications Media Center (OGT). Interns assigned to a caucus normally engage in research, constituent services, writing speeches and news releases, and related administrative work. Interns that work directly with the LSC staff draft legislation, perform legal research , monitor sessions of the General Assembly, and attend committee hearings. The interns assigned to OGT work as production assistants, where they assist in televising legislative sessions and in the production of public service communications.a

The internship program begins on the first Monday in December of each year and continues through December 31 of the following year. The application period begins January 1 of every year. The application deadline for the legislative internships is April 1. The application deadline for the telecommunications internships is May 31. The only eligibility requirement an applicant must meet is the completion of a bachelor's degree program prior to the beginning of the internship in December.
