2011 Season Recap

The tennis team had another successful season in 2011 under Dale Campbell's guidance. Despite being plagued with rain and inclement weather, the Belles won at least 10 matches for the sixth consecutive season. With a 13-8 overall record at the end of the year, it was the fourth time in the past five seasons that Saint Mary’s has won 13 matches in a single season.

After starting the year 0-2, the Belles came back to win five of their next six matches to pull to 5-2 on the season. From that point on, the team would boast at least a .500 win-loss percentage throughout the year.

Among the team's 13 wins was a pair of 5-4 victories over defending MIAA Champion Calvin. The first win over the Knights secured at least a share of third place in the conference for Saint Mary's. The second decision gave the Belles their first win in a first round match in the MIAA Tournament since the conference changed format of the season-ending tournament in 2007.

Of the Belles' 13 victories this spring, five came against MIAA opponents in the regular season. Moreover, the team won five of their six "home" contests without playing a single match on their home outdoor courts at Saint Mary's. With rain and inclement weather throughout the spring, each of those six home matches took place at either the Eck Tennis Pavilion at the University of Notre Dame or at the South Bend Racquet Club.

Mary Therese Lee led the team with 15 singles wins and 13 doubles wins.

At the end of the season, Jillian Hurley '11 was named to the All-MIAA First Team. She became the fifth tennis player in program history to be named to either the All-MIAA First Team or Second Team in each of her four years for the Belles. She was a Second Team selection as a freshman and has been honored on the First Team for the last three seasons.

Hurley was also one of five individuals on the team to win at least 10 singles matches in 2011. Fellow senior Mary Therese Lee led the team with 15 singles wins and 13 doubles wins. Kate Grabarek '11 added 14 singles wins for the Belles. Freshman Mary Catherine Faller won 12 singles contests and 10 doubles matches. Hurley and classmate Jessica Kosinski each added 11 singles wins on the season for the Belles.
