Accommodations are available to those legally eligible. Arrangements for such consideration must be initiated by the student herself by contacting the DRO and completing intake and registration. It is the student’s responsibility to work with the DRO and faculty to articulate, arrange, and follow through on an accommodation plan and to notify the DRO as soon as any concerns with the plan arises.
Accommodation letters are sent to each faculty member listed on the Request Form for Accommodations. This letter informs the faculty member that the student has a disability (no specifics given) and recommends that the student be provided with specified academic accommodations. The student is expected to make a private appointment with each of the designated faculty member to discuss implementations.
Accommodations might include extended time, testing in a distraction free environment, use of a computer or scribe for an exam, note takers, books on tape or electronic text, sign language interpreters, Braille books, and FM systems. Substitutions for required courses are considered on a case by case basis by the Associated Dean of Academic Dean and the Disabilities Specialist. Limitations of the disability, not the disability itself, are the reasons accommodations are recommended and provided. Appropriate accommodations allow students with disabilities equal access to participate in and benefit from the instructional environment. Saint Mary’s College is an equal opportunity institution and will comply with all laws and regulations which mandate equality of opportunity.
