Welcome to the Center for Spirituality, where we focus on spirituality both as an academic discipline and as a way of life. The Center helps build a theologically well-grounded spirituality among members of the entire college community. This includes alumnae and friends of the College, both locally and nationally. It offers programs that address contemporary religious issues, creating a network for education in spirituality, especially for women.
At the Center, we ask you to think about these questions...
Is it possible to be smart and religious? Can one be a believer and a thinker at the same time?
We think so! At Saint Mary's. we are convinced that the life of the mind and the life of the spirit are intimately connected and mutually enriching. Further, a healthy spirituality includes acknowledgement of the embodied nature of the human spirit. Our approach to spirituality is wholistic.
What does spirituality have to do with social justice?
We emphasize the multi-faceted nature of spirituality, which includes attending to the social dimensions of spirituality. A key component of our mission is the incorporation of the voices of people who are poor, oppressed or otherwise marginalized by society.
Where can I get involved in conversations about issues that have a faith dimension and that really matter to people, especially during these troubled times?
We host projects like the Catholic Common Ground Initiative which invites the college community to discuss issues of concern as they arise. We also invite scholars from here and abroad to engage the community and the public in discussion of critical issues related to spirituality. Your concerns and your voice can be heard during these fruitful discussions!
If these questions resonate with you, we invite you to join us for a lecture, discussion group or conversation and broaden your ideas about your spirituality, your faith and your world.
