Softball Season Recap

2011

The softball team continued their streak of 20+ win seasons as they won 20 games while also boasting better than a .400 slugging percentage for the sixth consecutive season under head coach Erin Sullivan.

The Belles kicked off the season with an 8-2 record on their annual spring break trip to Fort Myers, Florida. In four of those games, Saint Mary's won via the mercy rule in five innings.

One of the biggest wins of the year was a 1-0 Saint Mary's victory over #13 and previously undefeated Adrian as the Bulldogs had entered the day as the lone program in all of NCAA Division I, II, or III or NAIA without a loss. A Chrissy Porter home run was the only offense of the game as the Belles picked up their first win over a nationally ranked opponent on the road since Saint Mary's won the 2004 MIAA Tournament Championship by defeating then-ranked #3 Alma at Scots Field.

After dealing with rain throughout most of the month of April, the Belles had to reschedule three of their final four conference doubleheaders of the year. As a result, the team played the equivalent of half of their conference season, or four MIAA doubleheaders, in four days' time. The team closed out those four days with five consecutive wins to secure the program’s sixth straight season of 20 or more wins.

At the end of the year, junior outfielder Lauren Enayati was selected to the All-MIAA First Team. Enayati led the Belles in batting average, at bats, hits, triples, and total bases in conference play during the 2011 season. A starter in each of the team's 16 conference games, she hit .397 with 23 hits in 58 at bats in league play. At the end of the season, she had more hits than any of the 140 players in the conference with at least one plate appearance this spring. Her batting average was the seventh-best among all conference players while her 27 total bases were good enough for a share of fifth-best in the league.

On the year, seven different players started in each of the team’s 33 games. Freshman Callie Selner led the team in batting average (.403) as six players tallied a .333 batting average or better in 2011. Junior Monica Palicki led the pitching efforts with 12 wins, 14 complete games, 111.1 innings pitched, a save, and one combined and four individual shut outs. The Belles had eight shut out wins of the year while their offense was held scoreless just three times.
