Friday, April 25

8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. Recognition Weekend Registration
Student Center Atrium

9:00–11:45 a.m. Spiritual Retreat: Journey of Hope
Blessed Basil Moreau was the founder of the Holy Cross family of Sisters, Priests, and Brothers. During this mini-retreat, we will meditate through prayer, reflection, and discussion on the legacy and vision that Moreau offers the world today. The retreat will conclude with a visit to the Holy Cross Sisters' Heritage Room.

9:00–10:15 a.m. Lifelong Learning Session #1: Exploring Faculty and Student Collaboration in Music and Social Work
Meet faculty and students from the College's six nationally accredited programs and explore the scholarship and research currently being pursued in these programs.

  • Option 1A–Music, Saint Mary's College Opera Workshop
    Professors Laurel Thomas, Chair of the Department of Music, and Nancy Menk, the Mary Lou and Judd Leighton Professor of Music, will lead a discussion exploring various aspects of Ordo Virtutum and Suor Angelica, the two musical dramas being performed as part of the College's opera workshop course. Professors Thomas and Menk received a Collaborative Study and Research grant from the College's Center for Academic Innovation to research and prepare to stage these two works, which primarily feature women.
  • Option 1B–Social Work, Field Education
    The Saint Mary's College Social Work Department has an outstanding reputation for preparing its majors for success in graduate school. Students and faculty will discuss the Department's three certificates (children and adolescents in legal and educational settings, health care and gerontology, and Spanish-speaking populations) and its unique 480-hour field education requirement.

10:30–11:45 a.m. Lifelong Learning Session #2: Exploring Faculty and Student Collaboration in Education and Nursing

  • Option 2A–Education, Children's Literature Today
    Professor Mary Ann Traxler and her students enrolled in EDUC 308, Children's Literature in the Classroom, will engage in an interactive discussion focusing on popular works in children's literature. Participants will be encouraged to share information about their own favorite children's books.
  • Option 2B–Nursing, Enhancing Learning Opportunities with Technology and Service
    Students and faculty from the Department of Nursing will showcase the new technology available in the College's nursing laboratory and highlight the hands-on learning opportunities students can complete through the Department's community service programs.

  • Combining Academic Excellence with Athletic Success
    Karen Johnson, Vice President for Student Affairs, and Lynn Kachmarik, Director of Athletics and Recreation, along with student athletes and varsity coaches, will discuss the interface between athletics and academics, and the benefits of being a student athlete.
  • The Life, Philosophy, and Beatification of Father Moreau
    Father John Pearson, CSC, Campus Ministry, Sister Amy Cavender, CSC, Assistant Professor of Political Science, and Joanne Snow, Professor of Mathematics and faculty representative at the beatification, will discuss the life, philosophy, and beatification of Father Basil Anthony Moreau.

1:15–2:15 p.m. She's Saint Mary's
Dan Meyer, Vice President for Enrollment Management, Admission staff, and students will explain the Saint Mary's College identity initiative, our new communications, the enrollment management process, and the important role you play in student recruitment.

2:30–3:45 p.m. Lifelong Learning Session #3: Exploring Faculty and Student Collaboration in Art and Chemistry

  • Option 3A–Art, Presentations of Student Works
    To complete the Department of Art's senior comprehensive requirement, majors must present a cohesive body of work which is original and aesthetically and conceptually sound. Current seniors in the Department will present various works from their comprehensive portfolios. Student presentations will focus on the techniques they used to produce their works and the influences that inspired them.
  • Option 3B–Chemistry, Women in Science
    The College's Dual-Degree Program in Engineering, first established in 1977, was recently expanded to better serve and prepare students. Professor Toni Barstis, Chair of the Chemistry Department and the College's pre-engineering advisor, along with students currently enrolled in the Dual-Degree Program in Engineering will describe how the program has changed and highlight recent student successes.


4:00–5:00 p.m. Presidents' Forum on Holy Cross Education with Carol Ann Mooney, Saint Mary's College; Father John Jenkins, CSC, the University of Notre Dame; and Brother Richard Gilman, CSC, Holy Cross College

7:30 p.m. Student Opera: Ordo Virtutum and Suor Angelica
Students will present two musical dramas: the medieval morality play Ordo Virtutum by the 11th-century visionary Hildegard von Bingen, and the one-act opera Suor Angelica by the 19th-century romantic composer Giacomo Puccini.

President Carol Ann Mooney and Laurie Stickelmaier, Vice President for Finance and Administration, will describe the financial health and the future of Saint Mary's College.


10:15 a.m.–12:15 p.m. Raising Charitable Children and Grandchildren: Leaving Your Leadership Legacy
This workshop, featuring Carol Weisman, speaker, author, trainer, and consultant, will provide simple strategies on how to incorporate philanthropy into the lives of our children and grandchildren.


12:30–2:00 p.m. Appreciation Luncheon

Please attend the afternoon programs at your leisure. All are informal, drop-in events designed so that you can attend all three if you wish.

2:30–4:00 p.m. Tea with the Sisters of the Holy Cross
