September 25, 2009 (Notre Dame, Ind.)—Saint Mary’s College students will host the second annual Trot for Tots 5K on campus on Sunday, October 11. The event, which is open to the public, is the prelude to the students’ spring Dance Marathon. Both events raise money for Riley Hospital for Children, a Children’s Miracle Network hospital in Indianapolis that services families from around the region, including the South Bend area.
While this is the second Trot for Tots to be held at the College, Saint Mary’s has hosted the Dance Marathon for four years. The April 2009 event raised $91,538 for Riley Hospital, a new record for the student-led event. Since students brought Dance Marathon to the College in 2006, they have raised approximately $245,000 for the Children’s Miracle Network hospital. Saint Mary’s is among approximately 100 colleges and universities that hold Dance Marathons to benefit Children's Miracle Network hospitals. Saint Mary’s students will host their next one on March 26-27, 2010 from 8 p.m.-8 a.m.
Last fall more than 100 people participated in the run. “Trot for Tots was a great success for us last year because we not only had great student participation, but we had a lot of members of the South Bend community participate as well. It’s an event we really look forward to because we love working with members of the community and raising awareness for this cause,” said Kelly Deranek ‘10, president of Dance Marathon. “This year, we hope to grow and encourage anybody interested in walking or running to come out.”
Participants can run or walk the 5K, which will take them through a course of scenic nature trails on the Saint Mary’s campus. The 5K will begin at 9 a.m. There will also be a half-mile Fun Run for kids at 10 a.m. Check-in and registration will begin at 7:30 a.m. in the Angela Athletic Facility.
Pre-registration fees are $20 for the 5K and $5 for the Fun Run. You may pre-register by emailing dmarathn@saintmarys.edu with your name, T-shirt size, and whether you’re interested in the 5K or Fun Run. You would then pay the "pre-registration price" at the race. You may also register the morning of the event. Fees the day of the event are $25 for the 5K and $10 for the Fun Run. The registration fee includes a black long-sleeved T-shirt.
