Real World Experiences Strengthen Students' Catholic Faith

Alison Russell ’10, a nursing major from Carmel, Ind., spent time in India working with the Missionaries of Charity founded by Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta. The experience of working in a health clinic and home for the destitute and dying left a lasting impression on Alison. “The simple acts I performed each day became sacred and holy; from passing out water, taking women to the bathroom and helping someone eat dinner to changing a dressing, sitting with a crying woman, or massaging a patient. Despite our lack of communication because of the language barrier—I spoke English and they spoke Hindi—I grew to cherish my days with these people and to love them deeply.”

While she hasn’t yet decided what field of nursing she will enter, Alison says her time spent in India opened up a world of possibilities for her. “I view nursing as a vocation in which I can compassionately serve the people of Christ with the gifts I have been given."

Grace Lape ’10, a humanistic studies major from native of Tempe, Ariz., took on an immense challenge by accepting an internship in New York City with Expectant Mother Care Frontline Pregnancy Centers. As an intern she counseled women who were considering abortions. “I was worried because I knew this experience would demand things of me which I knew would not be easy. I really did not know if I was ready for it.” Despite her doubts, took the internship. She decided that she would be successful if she saved just one unborn life.

“It helped me grow in my faith,” Grace says of the experience. “I am much more humble. I have a different perspective on the real world.” To read her blog entries from the experience, click here. Although Grace is unsure what her future holds, working with crisis pregnancies could be an option. “I love the work, and if the opportunity presents itself after graduation I would do it in a heartbeat. The work is so important and challenging I can think of few other jobs for me personally that would be as fulfilling. I know it would be a meaningful way to live.”
