May 18, 2009 (Notre Dame, Ind.)—Saint Mary's College President Carol Ann Mooney presented one of the College’s most faithful servants, Sister Rose Anne Schultz, CSC, with the prestigious President’s Medal at Saturday’s Commencement. The medal is presented rarely and exclusively to those who have offered exceptional contributions to the life of the College and the community. Sister Schultz, vice president for mission, retires from the College this spring.
Following in the footsteps of Blessed Basil Anthony Moreau, Sister Schultz has spent a lifetime in service to her Congregation and her College. She holds the distinction of being the youngest person to serve on the General Council of the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Cross. Her work at Saint Mary’s began in 1990 as the director of administration and mission at the Center for Spirituality and she also served on the Saint Mary’s Board of Regents, including a term as its chair.
Saint Mary’s was one of the first colleges or universities to have a Division for Mission and in 1994 Sister Schultz was asked to become the College’s first vice president for mission. She willingly jumped into uncharted waters and with typical vision and courage created an office that now touches the lives of the vast majority of students, faculty, and staff.
A deeply spiritual woman, she is known for her prayerful life and reverence for the sacred. She has a special interest in liturgical music and religious symbolism. College pilgrimages to El Salvador and Mexico were organized under her leadership and are tangible examples of her belief that we must reach out to those without a voice.
Sister Schultz is one of the most visible people on campus and she makes time to attend most College events. Her friends describe her as loyal, faithful and there when she is needed. Her staff members appreciate her attention to detail and careful preparation for meetings and retreats. The College will miss Sister Schultz and her daily contributions as she retires and begins a new chapter in her life.
Sister Mary Louise Gude , CSC, will join the College in July as vice president for mission, a joint appointment of the president of the College and the president of the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Cross.
