April 20, 2009 (Notre Dame, Ind.)—Saint Mary’s College recognizes National Poetry Month with two events at the Cushwa-Leighton Library on campus.
On Wednesday, April 22, at 7 p.m. Professor Thomas Bonnell of the English Department will talk about “English Poetry: Unpackaged, Prepackaged.” He will discuss the making of the English poetic canon based on his recent book, “The Most Disreputable Trade: Publishing the Classics of English Poetry, 1765-1810.” Oxford University Press published the book last year.
On Tuesday, April 28, at 7:30 p.m. the students in Sister Eva Mary Hooker’s poetry writing class will read their original works. This is the second year that Sister’s students will have participated in National Poetry Month, which has proven to be popular among their fellow students.
Both events will be held in the Cushwa-Leighton Library in the south lounge of the top floor. The public is invited to these free events.
National Poetry Month is a month-long, national celebration of poetry established by the Academy of American Poets. The concept is to widen the attention to the art of poetry, to living poets, to our complex poetic heritage, and to poetry books and journals of wide aesthetic range and concern. These events are intended to increase the visibility and availability of poetry in popular culture while acknowledging and celebrating poetry’s ability to sustain itself in the many places where it is practiced and appreciated.
Inaugurated by the Academy of American Poets in 1996, National Poetry Month is held every April, when publishers, booksellers, literary organizations, libraries, schools and poets around the country band together to celebrate poetry and its vital place in American culture. Thousands of businesses and non-profit organizations participate through readings, festivals, book displays, workshops, and other events. For more information about National Poetry Month, click here.
