October 2, 2009- The Moreau Art Galleries and the Department of Art at Saint Mary’s College is proud to announce the opening of a large group show and a new solo exhibition running from October 9-November 6. Gallery hours are 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Monday through Friday. The exhibits are free and open to the public. The public is also invited to the Artists’ Reception, a celebration of the opening of the exhibits, on Friday, October 9 from 5-7 p.m. For a campus map, click here.

In the Sister Rosaire Extension and Little Theatre Galleries you will find the exhibit Family Matters, a group exhibition featuring the work of Sarah Hollis Perry of Boston, Mass. and her daughters and daughters-in-laws—Elizabeth Perry (Pittsburgh, Penn.), Rachel Perry Welty (Boston, Mass.), Maria Burtis, and Charlotte Forbes Perry (Hawaii). The women in the Perry family are actively engaged in art making and work in a wide range of medias, including sensor-based wearables, fiber-based public interventionist projects, found object installations, painting and drawing. Sarah Hollis Perry inspired her daughters when, later in life, she returned to the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston to focus on her studio practice. Not only do the Perry women share a love of contemporary art and ideas that surround it, they often collaborate on projects with one another as an extension of the themes their work addresses.

In the Hammes Gallery, you will encounter “Teatro Anatomico,” a large-scale sculptural installation by Cristin Millett of State College, Penn. Millett received her bachelor of fine arts (BFA) from Kent State University, after attending the North Carolina School for the Arts for high school. She received her masters of fine arts (MFA) from Arizona State University and has taught at both the University of Maine and Penn State University. Currently Millett is an assistant professor at Penn State and teaches a range of courses in sculpture–from foundry to installation-based courses. Millett’s large-scale installations explore the impact of medicine and medical history. She is especially interested in our understanding of ’self’ and the body.
