Description: This annual event is put on by Student Diversity Board at Saint Mary's College. The purpose of the Diverse Students’ Leadership Conference is to enrich each participant's perspective of the adversities and benefits within diverse academic, social and professional settings. The Conference will also feature a high school track offering different workshops and speaker sessions for participating high school students.
The conference is structured so that all of those involved will accomplish the following:
* Identify the challenges and underlying prejudices that exist in various social institutions
* Develop educational and interactive skills to transform the challenges of diversity into opportunities
* Become empowered leaders actively promoting the advantages of diversity.
Keynote speakers who have been invited to participate in this year's conference are:
Richard Pimentel: Mr. Pimentel is a nationally renowned expert on disability management, job recruitment, job retention, the Americans with Disabilities Act, and attitude change. He is not only technically proficient; he is an exceptional communicator who has an ability to combine information, humor, metaphor, analogy and storytelling into an informative and memorable experience.
Gloria WilderBrathwaite, MD: Dr. WilderBrathwaite is a pediatrician and nationally recognized speaker on social justice issues. The first in her family to graduate from high school, she chose working with children and teens from economically fragile families in Washington, DC over a higher-paying setting for her medical career. In 2005, she received the National Caring Award for exceptional generosity and commitment to service, and in 2004, she was named Physician Humanitarian of the Year by George Washington University. She’s been featured on CBS’s 60 Minutes program and recognized by Oprah’s Angel Network.
