March 12, 2009 (Notre Dame, Ind.)—Daffodils are the first blossom of spring, a sign that better days are ahead. The flower holds similar meaning for the American Cancer Society. The organization looks forward to a time when cancer is not a life-threatening disease. Every year the Society holds a national event called Daffodil Days, where bunches of the yellow buds are sold and proceeds benefit its programs for cancer research, education and patient services. For years Saint Mary's College has been the largest contributor to Daffodil Days in Saint Joseph County, raising around $9,000 a year.

On Thursday, March 26, the lobby of the Student Center will take on a sunny hue as thousands of daffodils fill the space waiting for students, faculty, and staff pick them up. The event, which is sponsored by the Office of Civic and Social Engagement (OCSE), takes place between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., with flowers usually budding by 1 p.m.

"Daffodil Days fits our mission, because cancer awareness is a social issue and the money raised supports local cancer services. The flowers remind those who have been touched by cancer that there are people who care and that we all hold out hope for a cure," said Carrie Call, OCSE director.
