April 13, 2009 (Notre Dame, Ind.)—The Center for Women’s Intercultural Leadership (CWIL) at Saint Mary’s College welcomes Amy Chua, professor of law at Yale University, to the College on Thursday, April 16 for a lecture titled “The Rise and Fall of Hyperpowers: Tolerance, Intolerance and Lessons for America.” The talk, which is free and open to the public, will take place from 12:30-1:30 p.m. in Welsh Parlor in Haggar College Center. Chua will be speaking about her new highly acclaimed book Day of Empire: How Hyperpowers Rise to Global Dominance—and Why They Fall. The talk is part of an ongoing CWIL lecture series, which features distinguished women speakers who offer important perspectives on world leadership issues.

“Saint Mary’s prepares women to make a difference in the world, and to do so one has to understand global dynamics and how the U.S. fits into them,” said Elaine Meyer-Lee, director of CWIL. “With the challenging state of the current global economy, CWIL is glad to be able to host such an enlightening and timely talk for our area.”

Chua has taught at Duke University, Columbia University, New York University, Stanford University, and Yale University. She received degrees in economics and law from Harvard University. Prior to her teaching career, she was a corporate law associate. She specialized in the study of international business transactions, law and development, ethnic conflict and globalization and the law.
