June 9, 2009 (Notre Dame, Ind.)—The Saint Mary’s College Center for Spirituality will host its 24th Annual Seminar on Carmelite Spirituality on June 14-20. This year’s conference is titled “Carmel's Search for Wisdom: Prayer and Contemplation.” The seminar speakers are members of the North American Carmelite Forum, nine members of which have been working together since 1982. The Carmelite Order was founded about 1200 A.D. on Mount Carmel, a coastal mountain range that begins just south of the city of Haifa in Israel. The charism, or spiritual focus, of Carmelite spirituality is prayer and contemplation. The best-known Carmelite saints are Teresa of Avila, John of the Cross and Therese of Lisieux (the Little Flower) and Edith Stein.
The seminar will be held at the College and includes lectures, workshops prayer, study and daily Eucharist. The seminar is an opportunity to renew one’s life, prayer and commitments. The Center for Spirituality welcomes women and men of all faiths as well as religious and clergy. The seminar begins with a celebration of the Eucharist at 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, June 14 and concludes with lunch on Saturday, June 20.
The 25th anniversary of this seminar will occur with a National Conference at Saint Mary’s College, June 16-20, 2010 with the theme “Carmel’s Quest for the Living God.”
Anyone interested in attending this seminar should contact Kathy Guthrie at (574) 284-4636 or kguthrie@saintmarys.edu for more information.
