October 22, 2009 (Notre Dame, Ind.)—Dr. Tony Bennett, Indiana Superintendent of Public Instruction, will speak at Saint Mary’s College on Tuesday, October 27 as part of the Cross Currents Program’s Collegiate Speakers Series. His speech is titled “Educational Leadership for Indiana and Beyond: Discerning a Career Path with Passion and Purpose.” Cross Currents, an enhanced student-advising system that debuted at the College this fall, helps students navigate not only their majors, but also who they are as individuals. Bennett will reflect on his own career discernment as it relates to the critical questions at the heart of the College’s program: who am I, what are my passions, to what am I called and how can I make a positive difference in the world?

“The Collegiate Speakers Series enables our students to hear from a wide-range of Indiana citizens who have chosen careers that demonstrate their passionate commitments,” said Dr. Patricia Fleming, Senior Vice President and Dean of Faculty. “Our students will have an opportunity to explore with Dr. Bennett what factors influenced him to enter the field of education and administration. They will learn from him what it is about this career that resonates as a calling or a vocation.”

The superintendent will not be discussing his plans to revamp teacher-licensing requirements or other aspects of his education transformation plan for the state. His appearance at the College should not been seen as an endorsement of his plans. As a practice, Saint Mary's College does not endorse proposed public policies and/or political candidates.

Bennett’s speaking engagement will be directed towards Saint Mary’s students, faculty and staff, but is open to the public. The lecture will take place at 6:30 p.m. in Carroll Auditorium in Madeleva Hall. For a Campus Map, click here.
