Alternative Spring Break 2010
Women's Service in the City - Lend your hands!
Alternative Spring Break 2010
Description of Program:
The women’s service in the city is an intensive 6-day experience featuring programming on social issues alongside hands-on, direct service. Saint Mary’s Office for Civic and Social Engagement is working in partnership with the Indianapolis Peace Institute to provide this unique opportunity. Participants will meet with representatives and hear first-hand reports of how various urban, social realities affect women. In spring of 2010 the target issues will include domestic and sexual violence against women, women in the criminal justice system, human trafficking, and women’s health issues. Local leaders, representatives from agencies within Indianapolis, and clients and those affected by the issues will provide information, insight and inspiration. Field trips to a variety of sites are also included. There will also be opportunity for worship and/or spiritual reflection. The focus on issues is balanced with opportunities for direct service (e.g. soup kitchen/food pantry) and daily reflection sessions. This program is limited to 12 participants.
Last year’s participants said it was one of the best experiences they have ever had! Past attendees will be at the information session (info below) and will share their experiences and answer questions.
