Where do I start?
Recommended Steps
Here are some recommended steps if you are considering moving toward a community-based learning pedagogy.
- Think carefully about the learning outcomes for the specific class. Consider what you think a community-based component would add to those outcomes. This helps to clarify what it is you're hoping to accomplish. It will also help with assessment.
- Visit some web sites to explore what other people in your field have done with community-based learning. Some of the best websites include the following:
- Contact the Director of the Office for Civic and Social Engagement. In return,
- You will be sent a copy of the text "Where's the Service in Service-Learning?" (an excellent introductory and research-based text) along with the appropriate title for your discipline from the American Association for Higher Education's Series on Service-Learning in the Disciplines.
- You will be assisted in making contact with local agencies or professionals for the service aspect of your course.
- You will receive copies of all the necessary legal paperwork for service-learning in the classroom.
- You can ask questions and receive a one-on-one consultation about your course design and plans.
