Susan Vance, J.D., C.P.A.

Professor of Business Law and Accounting, Senior Project Director of Women's Entrepreneurship Initiative (WEI)
Dr. Vance is a licensed attorney and a certified public accountant. During her twenty-six years at Saint Mary's College, she has taught Business Law I, Business Law II, International Business Law, Survey of International Business and Economics, Principles of Accounting II, Cost Accounting, Personal Income Tax, New Venture I and II entrepreneurial classes, Small Business Consulting, and Strategies for Financial Success. She is the former chair of the Department of Business Administration and Economics.
Professionally, Dr. Vance is a former member of the nine member Board of Examiners of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA). The Board of Examiners is responsible for the nationally administered CPA examination. In addition Dr. Vance chaired the Business Law and Professional Responsibilities section of the examination. After leaving the Board of Examiners, she served as an AICPA Business Law subject matter expert for several years.
Dr. Vance was designated a “Distinguished Alumni” by Thomas M. Cooley Law School in 1997. That same year, Dr. Vance received the Charles E. Hewitt Excellence in Teaching Award from the Academy of Legal Studies in Business (ALSB). The ALSB is a national association that promotes and encourages scholarship and superior teaching of business law and other law related courses at the undergraduate level. In addition, Dr. Vance was selected by the students at Saint Mary's College to receive the first annual “Woman of the Year” award. Dr. Vance is a retired lieutenant commander in the US Coast Guard Reserves.
Dr. Vance is senior project director of the Women's Entrepreneurship Initiative (WEI), launched at Saint Mary's College in the spring of 2010.
About WEI: In 2009, the College received a $245,000 Small Business Administration grant to support women’s entrepreneurship programming in the South Bend community, which led to the creation of WEI. The initiative was developed through the collaborative efforts of the Department of Business Administration and Economics (BUEC) and the staff of the Center for Women’s Intercultural Leadership (CWIL). Through WEI, the College is partnering with community businesses, non-profits and organizations to provide a number of financial and business education services to women entrepreneurs. WEI is pronounced "we."
