April 1, 2008 (Notre Dame, Ind.)– Twenty-three Saint Mary’s College students have been paired with 23 Sisters of the Holy Cross as part of an innovative video project for a U.S. History class. The project aims to bring American history to life through the lived experience of the sisters. The students will take the knowledge of American history they obtain from their course, U.S. History since 1865, and apply it directly to interviews with the sisters. The day is named for the first known female mathematician, Hypatia of Alexandria. Hypatia was born in 370 A.D., the daughter of the mathematician and philosopher Theon. Theon trained his daughter in math at a time when girls did not receive such education.
