Our current seniors' post-graduation plans

Megan Bolander (BM Voice)
"I will be beginning my Master's in Musicology at the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana." Megan sang the Soul in Hildegard’s Ordo Vitutum this year. She has a special interest in the American composers Aaron Copland and Samuel Barber, and received honors for her comprehensive project on a song cycle by Copland. Megan received the departmental award this year for her academic excellence. Her scholarly attitude, including the openness to learning new things and a willingness to take on challenging projects, will be invaluable as she develops her interest in musicology.

Crystal Buck (BM Voice)
Crystal’s senior comprehensive pushed new boundaries by focusing on medieval music and she received honors! She started our music club, designed to create camaraderie amongst our majors and minors. She initiated the annual Foreign Language Recital, a collaboration between the departments of Music and Modern Languages, and she sang the lead in this year’s production of Suor Angelica. She studied the vocal music of George Crumb in an independent study with Dr. Jacob. Crystal will be working on an M.M. in vocal performance at the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee.
Joan Currie (BM Music Ed.)
"I will be teaching music at Saint Pius X Catholic School in Granger, a new school for preschool-eighth grade, and I will be working with all of these students. I will be developing the music curriculum and selecting the resources for the music classroom, and will be working closely with the liturgical directors to put together several musical ensembles at the school." Joan pushed the boundaries of the comp into new 20th century territory and dealt creatively with the analytical challenge of non-specific pitches and a much greater emphasis on timbre. She was asked to deliver the presentation in an art class at SMC, and in local high schools.
Laura Miller (BM Music Ed.)
Our fun-loving, energetic, inspiring friend Laura will be student teaching in the fall, and she will continue to sing with the Women’s Choir. Laura’s comprehensive project on Ives was an extension of the Ives recital she helped prepare the fall of her freshman year. Laura loves theater, is very dramatic herself, and will be a great teacher. The resilience and strength she has shown through the special personal challenges she faced during her time with us will be hallmarks of her life.
Bridget Spore (BM Music Ed.)
"Next year I plan on teaching in the Cincinnati area and auditioning for a professional choir. I would love to teach high school vocal music to utilize my piano, vocal, theory, and conducting skills developed at SMC. My eventual goal is to pursue graduate work in choral conducting." Bridget is leaving the legacy of Bellacappella, our student-run group, which she began with another student. She exhibited a great interest in building a community among music majors and in making college life more fun. Bridget did concentrations in both piano and voice. She was the student conductor of the Women’s Choir and finished her student teaching this spring. She is funny, dependable, smart, and full of life.

BA in Music with a specialized concentration grows in popularity
This is done by concentrating required electives into a guided program. For instance, one student is working on a BA with a music education concentration; another has chosen a vocal performance concentration. See details.
