Elementary Education Major Requirements

PROGRAM IN EDUCATION

The degree offered through the Education department is the Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree with a major in Elementary Education. Students are required to have a college minor or certification area. Minors and certification areas offered through the Education department include Early Childhood Education Pre K-2, English as a Second Language and Bicultural Education, Reading, and Mild Intervention.

BACHELOR OF ARTS

Major in Elementary Education—ELED (65 hours) 

All of the following are required:

  • EDUC 201 Foundations for Teaching in a Multicultural Society
  • EDUC 213 American Mosaic: Integrative Approaches to the Arts in the Elementary/Middle School Classroom
  • EDUC 215 Teaching Wellness in the Elementary/Middle School
  • EDUC 220 Applied Media and Instructional Technology
  • EDUC 230 Educational Psychology: Foundations of Special Education in Elementary/Middle School 
  • EDUC 240 General/Special Education Partnership in Elementary/Middle School
  • EDUC 301 Teaching Language Arts in Elementary/Middle School
  • EDUC 302 Teaching Social Studies in Elementary/Middle School
  • EDUC 303 Teaching Science in Elementary/Middle School
  • EDUC 304 Teaching Reading in Elementary/Middle School 
  • EDUC 305 Teaching Mathematics in Elementary/Middle School
  • EDUC 308 Children’s Literature in Elementary/Middle School
  • EDUC 352 Educational Psychology: Human Growth and Development of the Pre-School/Elementary/Middle School Student

Major in Elementary Education with Mild Intervention Licensure, K-6—ELMI (77 hours) 

In addition to the ELED requirements, all of the following are required:

  • EDUC 362 Positive Behavioral Support
  • EDUC 365 Assessment Strategies for Exceptional Learners
  • EDUC 368 Intervention Strategies in Reading and Other Content Areas
  • EDUC 434 Collaboration and Consultation in Special Education
  • EDUC 471 Student Teaching in the Elementary/Special Education Classroom

Major in Elementary Education with Indiana Reading Licensure, P-12—ELER (74 Hours)

In addition to the ELED requirements, all of the following are required:

  • EDUC 306 Multicultural Approaches to the Teaching of Reading
  • EDUC 481 Seminar in Reading
  • EDUC 486 Practicum in Reading

Minor in Early Childhood Education—ECED (15 hours)

This is a College minor, not a licensure program.

All of the following are required:

  • EDUC 201 Foundations for Teaching in a Multicultural Society
  • EDUC 310 Introduction to Early Childhood Education
  • EDUC 311 Curriculum and Assessment in Early Childhood Education
  • EDUC 480 Seminar in Early Childhood Education
  • EDUC 485 Practicum in Early Childhood Education

Minor in English as a Second Language/Bilingual/Bicultural Education, K-12—ENLB (15 hours)

Leads to licensure in English as a Second Language.

All of the following are required:

  • EDUC 201 Foundations for Teaching in a Multicultural Society
  • EDUC 430 Foundations of English as a Second Language (ESL) and Bilingual/Bicultural Education (BBE)
  • EDUC 432 Methods and Materials of English as a Second Language (ESL) and Bilingual/Bicultural Education (BBE) 
  • ENLT 304  History of the English Language

One of the following is required:

  •  ANTH 141 Culture and Society
  •  ANTH 253 Survey I: Culture and Language
  •  COMM 350 Intercultural Communication
  •  ICS 201 Introduction to Intercultural Studies

Minor in Secondary Education, 5-12—EDUC (33 hours)

Student must be enrolled in an approved major. 

SECONDARY EDUCATION: LIST OF APPROVED MAJORS

Students planning to complete the Secondary Education minor must have a major or complete the approved coursework in one of the following content disciplines approved for Saint Mary’s College: English; modern languages (French, Spanish); mathematics; science (science majors must complete licensing requirements in one of the following areas:  chemistry or life science); history (history majors must complete additional course work in political science and one of the following: sociology, psychology, economics); political science (political science majors must complete additional course work in history and one of the following: sociology, psychology, economics).

One of the following is required:

  •  EDUC 443 Teaching Social Studies in Middle/High School
  •  EDUC 445 Teaching Modern Languages in Middle/High School
  •  EDUC 447 Teaching English in Middle/High School
  •  EDUC 449 Teaching Science in Middle/High School
  •  EDUC 451 Teaching Mathematics in Middle/High School

Visual Arts or Music Education

Students must complete all the courses in the appropriate grade level.

Grades 5–12 (33 hours)
