Justine Siegal, founder of Baseball For All, will give a talk in Vander Vennet Theater in the Student Center on Wednesday, April 18 at 7:00 p.m. in conjunction with the display "Diamond Dreams: Girls and Women in Baseball."

Baseball For All is a non-profit dedicated to providing meaningful opportunities and instruction in baseball, especially for girls. Baseball For All envisions a day when girls will have the same opportunities as boys to compete in baseball at every level of play.  Justine Siegal has played baseball since childhood, playing in high school leagues, men's summer leagues, women's international play, and pitching batting practice for several Major League Baseball teams.

The talk is free and open to the public.

Women have been a part of the baseball scene in the United States since 1866. However, most people only associate females and baseball with the movie A League of Their Own

This exhibit showcases female baseball players from the 1860s through players who have been a part of the current USA Baseball National Women's Team. Learn about players like Lizzie Arlington and Clementina Brida, two players from Mahanoy City, PA who went on to baseball fame between 1890 and 1940, as well as players of today, including young women playing both high school and college baseball.

There is even an exhibit case showing how baseball was first played on the Saint Mary's College campus during Founder's Day in 1905!

There are also trophies, medals, a uniform worn in the filming of A League of Their Own, and a bat used in the television series, "Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman" during an episode featuring an 1870s baseball game!

The exhibit is free and open to the public through June 15, 2012.

Update, May 7, 2012: See John Kovach, Saint Mary's College archivist and the curator of the exhibit, interviewed by WNIT Public Television for their "Experience Michiana" series!

At the time of her disappearance, Dr. Gonner was working on an article about women and crime in the 1880s. The focus of her article was the infamous Belle Starr, a female outlaw from the Wild West.

The library has a trial subscription to Art and Architecture Complete (currently in a beta version) through December 15.  Art and Architecture Complete offers indexing and abstracts for more than 630 academic journals, magazines and trade publications as well as for over 150 books with full-text coverage of more than 250 of the periodicals. Subject coverage includes antiques, art and art history, interior and landscape design, and much more.

We're especially interested in how this database compares with our current art database, Wilson's Art Full Text.  So please try it out, and let Julie Long (jlong@saintmarys.edu) know what you think!
