What's New at the Library?

May 7, 2012

Women have been a part of the baseball scene in the United States since 1866. However, most people only associate females and baseball with the movie A League of Their Own

This exhibit showcases female baseball players from the 1860s through players who have been a part of the current USA Baseball National Women's Team. Learn about players like Lizzie Arlington and Clementina Brida, two players from Mahanoy City, PA who went on to baseball fame between 1890 and 1940, as well as players of today, including young women playing both high school and college baseball.

There is even an exhibit case showing how baseball was first played on the Saint Mary's College campus during Founder's Day in 1905!

There are also trophies, medals, a uniform worn in the filming of A League of Their Own, and a bat used in the television series, "Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman" during an episode featuring an 1870s baseball game!

The exhibit is free and open to the public through June 15, 2012.

Update, May 7, 2012: See John Kovach, Saint Mary's College archivist and the curator of the exhibit, interviewed by WNIT Public Television for their "Experience Michiana" series!
