Now Effective

The Health Center will be scheduling appointments to see a Registered Nurse.

Our goal is to:

  • best accommodate your time and class schedule;
  • mirror "real-life" access to healthcare;
  • give staff opportunities to participate in on-campus activities, programming, etc.;
  • give us more detailed statistics on usage times, visit lengths, etc.;
  • bring the two areas of Women's Health in-line with each other:
    Women's Health = Health Center and Counseling Center

Walk-in visits will still be available, as time allows between appointments. You will always have the option to wait or schedule an appointment.

Emergencies will be addressed as they always have been...as emergencies!

Welcome to the Health Center!

The Health Center recognizes each Saint Mary's College student as being a unique individual created by God. We support the educational mission of the college by providing high quality care in an accessible, safe, secure, and confidential environment. The staff is committed to assisting students in their development of knowledge, skill and behaviors necessary to become self-directed health advocates. We encourage women to participate actively in their own health maintenance and to make informed choices regarding their care.

FEE:
Students are not charged for visits to the Health Center, general medications, or general medical supplies. Students are charged for any medications, medical supplies, or tests ordered specifically for them. The Health Center will send insurance information to test providers or send copies of prescription drug cards to the pharmacy. However, the Health Center does not file insurance forms. Students are strongly encouraged to have some type of health insurance coverage in the event of a health care crisis.

A $10.00 fee will be assessed to any student who misses an appointment and fails to cancel.

PRESCRIPTIONS: The Health Center can fill prescriptions due to a partnership with Merrill Pharmacy. Merrill Pharmacy delivers to campus Monday through Friday, with pickup available between 4:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. Students are responsible for payment of each prescription ordered from Merrill when it is picked up. Payment may be made by cash, check, credit card, or charge to student account.

Although Merrill Pharmacy does work to accept most insurance providers, coverage is accepted at the discretion of Merrill Pharmacy. If your insurance requires you fill your medications from a pharmacy other than Merrill it will be your responsibility to pick up the medication at that particular pharmacy.

Outside physicians can provide the Health Center with a written prescription or call the pharmacy directly. Phone prescription orders are not accepted.

CLASS ABSENCES: The Health Center provides no written excuses for class absences or missed employment. It is the responsibility of the ill student to contact the appropriate faculty members about missed classes.

LABS: Laboratory services are available daily between 8:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Physicians outside the Health Center may fax an order or send an order with a student for laboratory tests and the results will be sent to the ordering physician. No phone orders are accepted. Students or a party designated by them are responsible for laboratory charges. Insurance information will be sent to the South Bend Medical Foundation with the collected specimen. Insurance is filed by the South Bend Medical Foundation.

REFERRALS/TRANSPORTATION: The Health Center has access to many excellent resources within the South Bend/Mishawaka area. Due to the ongoing positive relationship between Saint Mary's College and these resources, referrals are easily made on an as-needed basis. At the request of the Health Center, Security provides off-campus medical transportation. Transportation is provided in an immediate need situation and for referral appointments scheduled by the Health Center.
