Why I Want to Be a Social Worker

Audrey Leonard '10, CASIE Center

The idea to do something meaningful with my life had been brewing for a while and came to fruition during my first year of college, and coming to Saint Mary’s made me realize how truly blessed I am. I was given a good life, and I should do what I can do help those who were not as lucky. I soon learned that Saint Mary’s had an outlet for dreamers like me, and it was the Social Work Department.

Since my decision to pursue Social Work, I have had my mind set on clinical work. I love listening to the stories of people’s lives and working closely with them. I began to experience a change of heart as I researched human trafficking organizations for a class and thought more seriously about working on the macro level. I read about human rights groups and the work they had done to fight injustices. As I pictured myself doing such work, I came to the conclusion that there is no set path for me to follow. Since I am not defining my life right now, I will trust Leo Tolstoy: “The sole meaning of life is to serve humanity”.
