Meet the Social Work Majors
![]() Crystal Vinalon '12, Youth Service Bureau My parents have always been generous in nature. But it wasn’t until after my brother brought me to my first volunteer experience in middle school, I knew I wanted to do something to help others. From that point on I fell in love with volunteering. I also had to find something that could fulfill my need for constant action, though. When I came to Saint Mary's College I was uncertain what major could do this for me. Choosing Social Work as my major set in when one of my classes incorporated field visits. I saw how much the workers we visited loved their job and how action-filled the social work field actually is. Being a social worker means I can help others reach their full potential and be a positive influence in their lives and, at the same time learn valuable life lessons from each individual I meet. |

It is easy for me to appreciate and recognize the unique and special needs of those looking to maintain happiness, dignity, and a life of independence. As a social worker, I will help senior citizens improve their quality of life and alleviate some of the negative aspects of aging. I will strive to promote my belief that every individual is special and has something unique to offer, no matter the age of the client or what their circumstances might be. I am proud to say that studying social work at Saint Mary's will allow me to put my compassion and concern for the needs of others to good use. |
![]() Kirsten Thornton '12, Office of Joe Donnelly I want to be a social worker because I have a passion for helping people. There is no better feeling in the world than knowing I have made a positive impact in someone’s life. I particularly have a passion for those men and women who have served in our nation’s military. I chose social work because I can combine two things that are so important to me. With every class I take I cannot wait to get out into the field and put to work all I have learned. I know that I have made the right choice in social work. |
