I always knew I wanted to help people. I had gone through various phases of career ambitions, from doctor to political activist, to finally settle on social work as a profession. Many of my peers or those who do not know me as well would see my mother as my biggest influence, but it is really oppression that drives me to do the work that I choose to do. I cannot understand the discrimination that exists still in this country when we have so much to share. I do not understand the prejudice that people hold on to as if it is merely a way of building themselves up. It is true that our society has a certain class system, but it is not true that it is unchangeable.
I strive to be the change I wish to see in the world. It is not through my influence that I wish to change people for the better, it is through my example. It is never a matter of how much I can talk someone into doing something, but it is by empowering them to overcome stereotypes and be more caring individuals that can truly make this world a better place. I know it may not be my generation that sees the shift, but being part of a profession that strives all their days to see a foundation for it is why I want to be a social worker.
