GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Saint Mary's College cross country team had a big day at the Calvin Invitational on Saturday.
In a meet packed with some of the top NCAA Division III and NAIA programs in the country (including #2 Calvin), the Belles harriers turned in some of their best times of their careers while finishing 12th with a team score of 331. The top five finishers for the Belles all finished the 5k race within 20:15.
Megan McClowry was the top finisher for Saint Mary's. The senior had the fastest time of her collegiate career with a 19:35 (47th). Freshman Julia Kenney also broke the 20 minute barrier in just her second race with the Belles as she finished in 19:51 (59th).
A pack of Saint Mary's runners finished within eight seconds of each other shortly after Kenney's finish. Crossing the finish line next for the Belles were Joanne Almond in 20:11 (74), Clare McVey in 20:14 (75), Catie Salyer in 20:15 (76), and Arianne Rodriguez in 20:19 (79). The four each had their best times of their collegiate careers as well. Angela Nebesny rounded out the top seven finishes for the Belles with a 20:32 (82).
NCAA Division III powerhouse and #2 ranked Calvin took the team title at their own event with a team score of 28.
The Belles will compete next Saturday at the MIAA Jamboree, which is hosted by Hope College and begins at 11:00 a.m.
