Athletic Camp Directors

Director: Erin Sullivan

Erin Sullivan will be in her seven season as Athletics Camp Director.  Erin also serves as the Softball coach for Saint Mary's College.

During the 2006 Softball campaign, she guided Saint Mary's to their most wins in school history (28) while posting a third place finish in MIAA play. In 2007, Sullivan's squad finished the season with the highest winning percentage in program history with a .735 clip (25-9 record).

The 2008 Belles squad had their highest finish in MIAA play ever as the team finished the regular season in second place with a record-high 12 wins. Last spring, the program had their fifth consecutive 20+ win season.

The 2010 squad set many school and conference records. Sullivan's team led the MIAA in batting average (.373) and set the MIAA record for most total bases (253) as well as setting the second highest number of hits in conference history with 176, just three hits short of the record.

During Sullivan's tenure, the Belles have had four pitchers throw six no-hitters since 2006. Moreover, Sullivan has coached 11 All-MIAA players, two MIAA MVP, a two-time MIAA Batting Champion, four NFCA All-Region athletes, 26 NFCA Scholar Athletes, and a two-time All-American in five seasons.

Coach Sullivan is a 2004 alumna of Saint Mary’s where she was a four-year starter. During her senior year she captained the softball team to their first ever MIAA Softball Tournament Championship. She was the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Batting Champion and the Offensive Player of the Year in 2004.

Coach Sullivan was a National Fastpitch Coaches Association Academic All-American for 2003 and 2004.

 

Athletic Camp Instructors

Basketball Coach: Jenn Henley

Jenn Henley returns to the court for her sixth season (2010-11) as head coach for the Belles with four very successful seasons behind her.

In her first season as head coach, the Belles attained a 10-6 MIAA record, which represented the most conference victories since joining the league at that point. In her second season, Henley coached a Belles team that played their way to the MIAA semi-finals for a second consecutive year. In 2009-10, she led the Belles to one of the best seasons in school history with record overall wins (17) and MIAA wins (13) while the team made their first appearance in the MIAA finals. Last season, the Belles won their fourth consecutive MIAA Tournament First Round game while finishing third in the league.

Prior to coming to Saint Mary's College, Henley spent five years as the head women’s basketball coach at Mount Union College. Prior to her career at Mount Union, Henley served as an assistant coach at Loras College while attaining her master’s degree in athletic administration, which she completed in 1998. The native of Fostoria, Ohio, played one season at Ohio Northern University until a career-ending knee injury stopped her during her freshman season. Henley earned her bachelor’s degree in 1997 in both sport management and communication arts.

Henley has taught upper-level classes at Mount Union in human performance and sport management.

Cross Country Coach: Jackie Bauters

Jackie Bauters enters her seventh year at the helm of the Belles cross country program in the fall of 2010.

A 2004 graduate of Saint Mary’s, Bauters was a three-year member of the cross country squad. In 2001 she was named to the MIAA second-team all-conference squad. In addition, she was named to the MIAA academic honor roll on three occasions. She also served as the team captain her senior year.

In 2006 and 2007, she coached Megan Gray to the NCAA Division III Championship race. It was the first time that Saint Mary's had a runner run in the National Championship event. Both Gray and Sara Otto earned MIAA All-Conference honors in 2006 in becoming the second and third Saint Mary's harriers to earn such an accolade. Last fall, Megan McClowry joined the list of All-MIAA cross country runners with her strong season.

In 2007, she guided the squad to the team title at the Thunder and Benedictine Invitationals. Saint Mary’s also posted back-to-back fourth place finishes at the MIAA Championships in 2007 and 2008.

“The cross country program at Saint Mary’s is steadily headed in a positive direction and as an alumna it means a lot to me,” Bauters said. “Being able to steadily progress toward the top tier of the MIAA during my tenure has been a great thrill.”

After graduating from Saint Mary’s, the Highland Heights, Ohio, native served as an assistant coach at Ithaca College (N.Y.) while earning her Master’s degree in sports psychology. During the 2005 season, she help guide the Bombers squad to an appearance at the NCAA championships.

Soccer Coach: Michael Joyce

Michael Joyce joined the College as the head coach of the varsity soccer program beginning with the 2010 fall season.

The California native has a wealth of collegiate coaching experience as he becomes the twelfth coach at the helm of the program at Saint Mary’s. He most recently served as the head coach of the women’s soccer team at Cornell College in Iowa from 2007-2009. At the Division III program, he guided the Rams to a third place conference finish and was named the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) Coach of the Year in 2007. Joyce also led the Rams to a pair of IIAC playoff appearances in 2007 and 2008.

Before being named the head coach at Cornell, Joyce served as the assistant men’s coach at the college and the head boys’ soccer coach at Clear Creek Amana High School. He was also the assistant coach of the men’s team at Division II San Francisco State University for four years from 2002-2006. In 2003, the Gators received an Academic All-American Team Award while Joyce oversaw student-athlete academic progress of the members of the team.

He also has over a decade of coaching experience at the youth and high school levels in California and Iowa.

Joyce holds both a United States Soccer Federation “B” coaching license as well as a National Soccer Coaches Association of America goalkeeping diploma.

During his playing career, Joyce was a member of the U17 and U23 North California State Olympic Development Team. He was a team captain, team most valuable player, and the West Catholic Athletic League Offensive Player of the Year at Saint Francis (Calif.) High School, where he also helped his team win the Central Coast championship in 1993.

From there, Joyce went on to play at San Francisco State, where was also a team captain, team MVP, and led the Gators in scoring. Joyce was also an all-conference and All Far West Region honoree at San Francisco State.

He earned his degree in English with a concentration in creative writing from San Francisco State and holds a Master of Arts in sport management from the University of San Francisco.

“I’m excited to be at a school with exceptional academics, a gorgeous campus, and a welcoming student body,” commented Joyce on his new position. “My goal is to make Saint Mary’s soccer a consistently competitive program, and a team whose culture the players are proud to be associated with. This is a group that cares passionately about their school and the soccer program.”

 

Tennis Coach: Scott Marshall

Scott Marshall enters his fourth season as an assistant tennis coach at Saint Mary’s in the spring of 2011.

In addition to his responsibilities at Saint Mary’s, Marshall has served as a tennis coach in several capacities across the Michiana area over the last ten years. In 2001, he began coaching both the high school boys and girls tennis teams at Ross Beatty High School in Cassopolis, Michigan.

He led both programs through the 2005 season and was named the 2004 Regional Coach of the Year for the boys’ team. After focusing solely on the girls program, he was chosen as the Conference Coach of the Year and Regional Coach of the Year on the girls’ side in 2006. He has continued to lead the girls program and is in his eleventh season with the Ross Beatty Rangers.

Beginning in the fall of 2010, Marshall has added head junior varsity coach into the mix, as he serves in that capacity for the South Bend St. Joseph’s High School boys program.

A USPTA certified teacher, Marshall teaches at the Lakeland Athletic Club in Niles, Michigan.

 

Volleyball Coach: Toni Kuschel

Toni Kuschel will begin her third season as the head volleyball coach for the Belles in the fall of 2010.

Originally from Pine River, Minn., Kuschel is a 1999 graduate from Pine River-Backus High School. After a successful prep career in volleyball and softball, Kuschel (then Elyea) went on to play collegiate volleyball and softball at Central Lakes College from 2000-01. During her time at Central Lakes, she was a part of two state, regional, and national championship volleyball teams. She also was the starting catcher both seasons for championship winning teams at Central Lakes.

From Central Lakes, Kuschel went on to gain her bachelor's degree from St. Cloud State University. Most recently, Kuschel has been coaching for the North Country Region Junior Olympic volleyball program for the past eight years as well as serving as an assistant volleyball coach at Mesabi Range College in Virginia, Minn.

She brought eight years of coaching experience with her to Saint Mary's from coaching many successful teams at the high school, Junior Olympic, and collegiate levels. Kuschel is a 2002 graduate of Central Lakes College where she earned an associate's degree before going on to earn a bachelor's degree in recreation and sport management from St. Cloud State University in 2005.
