Saint Mary's Summer Camps Rock!

Athletic CampsJuly 6-10July 13-17

Whether you are a beginner or a seasoned varsity player entering grades 6-11, these one-week athletic camps focus on team and individual skill development. Instructors include Saint Mary's College varsity coaching staff, athletes, and guest professionals. Volleyball, basketball, tennis, soccer, and softball are offered. Day camp options are available.

Angela Athletic Facility is the home for the Saint Mary's College Athletic Camps. The facility features three courts for volleyball or basketball. Outdoors, the campus offers offers six tennis courts, four asphalt basketball courts, a softball diamond, a soccer field, and one regulation sand volleyball court.

Sports

 Basketball - July 6-10 • July 13-17
Basketball Camp is played on the outdoor courts directly north of Angela Athletic Facility. The basic skills of passing, dribbling, and shooting will be stressed. Defensive and offensive strategies will also be emphasized through both instructional drills and scrimmages. As in all our camp programs, one-on-one instruction is an important aspect of our programs.

 

 

 

 

Soccer - July 6-10
Soccer Camp staff stress skill development in dribbling, passing, defense, and offense. Strategies of the game are taught through drills and scrimmages. Soccer will be only offered only during the first session of the Athletic Camps.

 

 

 

Softball - July 13-17 (CANCELLED)
Softball Camp emphasizes the basics of throwing, catching, fielding, hitting, base running, and pitching. As well as the individual skills of the game, positioning and strategies will be taught through game-like drills and scrimmages. Softball camp will be offered only during the second session of the Athletic Camps.

 

 

 

Tennis - July 6-10 • July 13-17
Tennis Camp concentrates on teaching and refining skills including ground strokes, volleys, serves, service return, and footwork. The instructors also focus on teaching campers basic doubles as well as singles strategies. Contests, games, and tournament play are scheduled throughout the week to reinforce the skills they have been taught.

 

 

 

 

Volleyball - July 6-10 • July 13-17
Volleyball Camp will stress the basic fundamental skills of the sport. Campers will participate in drills reinforcing proper techniques in setting, passing, hitting, blocking, serving, and serve reception. Various offensive and defensive systems of play as well as game strategies will be taught through scrimmages and demonstrations.

Athletic Camps Staff
Director: Erin Sullivan
 Erin Sullivan has just completed her third year as head softball coach at Saint Mary's College. During the 2006 campaign she guided Saint Mary's to their most wins in school history (28) while posting a third place finish in MIAA play. The Belles pitching staff ranked among one of the best in the country in 2007 as the squad was listed among national leaders in strikeouts and ERA. In 2008, she led them to their highest finish in the MIAA, tied for second after completing the regular season.

Erin is a 2004 alumna of Saint Mary's where she was a four-year starter and during her senior year captained the softball team to their first ever MIAA Softball Tournament Championship. She was the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Batting Champion and the Offensive Player of the Year in 2004. Erin was a National Fastpitch Coaches Association Academic All-American for 2003-2004.

Athletic Trainer: Stacy Schlumbohm
Stacy is in her sixth year as part of the Camps and fifth full year as part of the Athletics Department at Saint Mary's College. She is a 2001 graduate of Mount Marty College in South Dakota and earned her master's in athletic training from Western Michigan University in 2003.

Athletic Camp Instructors

Basketball Coach: Jennifer Henley
A veteran of five years as the head women’s basketball coach at Mount Union College, Jennifer Henley is in her second season as the head coach of the Saint Mary’s program.

The native of Fostoria, OH played one season at Ohio Northern University until suffering a career-ending knee injury during her freshman campaign. A dual major in sport management and communication arts, Henley earned her Bachelor’s degree from the Ada, OH school in 1997.

She served as an assistant coach Loras College as she worked toward the Master’s in Athletic Administration she completed in 1998 prior to joining Mount Union staff as an assistant coach.

In addition to her coaching exploits, Henley taught upper-level classes at Mount Union in Human Performance and Sport Management. Henley lives in South Bend with her husband Brandon Werling.

Soccer Coach: Caryn MacKenzie
Caryn Mackenzie will begin her fifth season in charge of the Belles soccer program this fall. During her first three seasons she has compiled a mark of 26-21-4. Her first season, she guided the Belles to a 10-5-1 record in MIAA which was good enough for a third place finish and the best league finish in Saint Mary’s history. In just two seasons, she has coached four first-team MIAA players as well as three other players who have garnered all-conference honors.

Mackenzie has successfully transitioned to the college game following a stellar career as the head coach of the girls soccer team at Adams High School ( South Bend, Ind.). At Adams she produced six conference championship teams, one Regional Championship team, and an IHSAA Semi-State Runner-up. Mackenzie was named the conference coach of the year three times and the District 2 Coach of the Year twice. Prior to her successful stint at Adams, she spent four seasons with Riley High School (South Bend, Ind.).

Mackenzie continues to serve as the Girls’ Athletic Director and Physical Education teacher at The Stanley Clark School in South Bend, Ind.

Softball Coach: Julie Bumgardner
Coach Julie Bumgardner enters into her fifth year coaching the Bengals of St. Benedict High School. Before coming to St. Benedict High School as Athletic Director, Coach Bumgardner worked for a year as Asst. Athletic Director and Varsity Basketball and Softball Coach at Good Counsel High School before its closing.

Coach Bumgardner comes to St. Benedict High School after playing as a NCAA Division I athlete at the University of Illinois at Chicago from 1996-2000. Coach Bumgardner, an infielder, was part of four Midwestern Collegiate Conference regular season and three post season tournament championships. The Flames recorded a 227-91 record in her four seasons (a .714 winning percentage), and won a record 67 games during the 1999 season. Coach Bumgardner holds the UIC single season batting record for games played (84), is in eighth place for hits (80), and nineth place for homeruns (10). Coach Bumgardner's accolades include Second Team All-Conference (1999), First Team All-Conference (1998), and First Team All-Region (1998).

Coach Bumgardner was honored on April 14, 2007 at the University of Illinois at Chicago's Flames Athletic Center as her 1999 team is inducted into the Hall of Fame 2007.

Tennis Coach: Chuck Rubino
Chuck Rubino completed his first season as the head tennis coach of Saint Mary's College. The Belles finished the 2008 season with a record of 12-10 for a fourth place league finish.

Coach Rubino comes to Saint Mary's from a lengthy coaching career at Dowagiac Union High School (Mich.) where he coached both the boys and girls varsity tennis teams from 1991-1995 and then returned as the girls varsity coach from 2003-2007.

During his time at Dowagiac, he has guided his teams to a co-regional championship in 2004 and a regional championship in 2005 as well as qualifying his team to the state tournament and placing in the top 11 in 2004.

Rubino is an active 20 year United States Tennis Association (USTA) player and plays out of the Lakeland Racquet club in Niles, Mich. He won a gold medal in singles in the Michigan Senior Olympics for the 55 year age group in 2005.

Rubino is a graduate of Central Michigan University with a B.S. in education. He is a recently retired teacher of the Dowagiac schools. Chuck and his wife, Eileen, reside in Dowagiac and have three grown children, Michael, Nicholas and Lisa. Lisa plays tennis for the Belles of Saint Marys.

Volleyball Coach: Julie Schroeder-Biek
A 1988 alumna of Saint Mary’s, Julie Schroeder-Biek completed her 14th season as the head coach of the Belles volleyball program.

She has long history at Saint Mary’s. Schroeder-Biek completed her collegiate playing career as a Belle in 1986 where she set single season school records in kills, hitting percentage and blocks. Before graduation she served as an assistant coach during the 1987 season. In 1991 she started her first stint when she served as the head coach till the 1996 season. Her second tenure at the helm started during the 2000 season.

The resident of Cassopolis, MI began her coaching career at the age of 22 when she served as the head volleyball coach at Southwestern Michigan College as well as Dowagiac High School.

Schroeder-Biek playing career began at Mishawaka High School, where she was named MVP of the school's first State Championship Volleyball Team. In 1993, she was inducted into the Mishawaka High School Athletic Hall of Fame as a three sport Most Valuable Player. She earned All-American honors at Southwestern Michigan College. Julie then was recruited to play at the University of Wisconsin-Madison where a back injury cut her career short. After a few years off of competition, she transferred to Saint Mary's College to play out her final year of eligibility.

In addition to her coaching duties, Julie also serves as associate athletic director and as an admissions counselor at Saint Mary’s. She is married to Jon Biek. The couple has a daughter, Jessica.
