ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: McKenna Corrigan

The Saint Mary’s College Athletic Department honors senior softball player McKenna Corrigan as the Athlete of the Week. This past weekend she accomplished what no other pitcher at Saint Mary’s has ever done — an undefeated season on the mound in MIAA play. The lone senior on the squad ended the year 7-0 mark against league foes and went 12-0 overall. At the plate she was just as effective, posting a .333 batting average while leading the team with six homeruns. Her last homerun of the season came during a 2-for-3 effort against Tri-State on Saturday. She also tallied three RBI’s and scored two runs in helping the Belles to a 8-0 victory.

Saint Mary's student-athletes are powerful, in the classroom and on the playing fields. Our athletic program complements a student's overall educational experience. Six of our eight varsity teams were named to the MIAA-Academic Team. And over sixty percent of our student-athletes have been named to the dean's list. Our coaches and staff mentor student-athletes and show them the path to excellence. Many teams continually earn NCAA Division III Coaches All-American Academic Honors.

In additon to our varsity athletic programs, students can also join the cheerleading squad and club sports teams. Intramurals and excellent fitness equipment invite all students to have fun while they stay fit.

Summer Camps

There's just three months left to get registered for summer sports camp. Saint Mary's offers four-day camp experiences in basketball, soccer, softball, tennis and volleyball.

Softball- Three Belles Earn MIAA Honors

NOTRE DAME, IN – Ashley Peterson, McKenna Corrigan and Cathy Kurczak each received MIAA honors which were announced on Tuesday afternoon. Peterson and Corrigan were given First-Team accolades while Kurczak was named to the league’s Second-Team.

It is the first time all three players have earned either first or second team MIAA honors. The voting for the league awards is done by the nine coaches in the conference and is based on games against MIAA foes.

Softball- Peterson Named to First-Team All-Region Squad

NOTRE DAME, IN –Ashley Peterson was named to the Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division III Central Region team. The region includes 44 schools from the Ohio Athletic, Heartland, North Coast, President’s and the Michigan Intercollegiate conferences.

Peterson (Lansing, IL/Marian Catholic) recorded a team best .500 batting average as the No. 3 batter in the line-up. The sophomore also posted a team best .560 on-base and .773 slugging percentages. Her 55 hits this season set a new Saint Mary’s record for hits in a season, breaking the previous mark of 53 set by Andrea Arena during the 1997 campaign.

Softball- Belles Season Concludes at MIAA Tournament

ALMA, MI – The Saint Mary’s softball season came to an end on Thursday as they dropped a pair of games at the MIAA Tournament. In the first game, Tri-State used late runs to post a 6-3 win then in the consolation round, Hope knocked the Belles out of the tournament with a 7-1 victory.

The Belles, who came into the tournament as the No. 2 seed, complete the season with a 23-10 record.

Softball- Peterson, Corrigan Earn MIAA Honors

NOTRE DAME, IN – Sophomore outfielder Ashley Peterson was named the MIAA softball Player of the Week while senior pitcher McKenna Corrigan was named the league’s co-Pitcher of the Week. It is the second time in her career that Peterson has earned the honor while it is the first time ever for Corrigan.

Sophomore outfielder Ashley Peterson has been named the MIAA softball Player of the Week after helping Saint Mary’s to four wins last week. It is the first time in her career that Corrigan has earned the weekly accolade. She shares the award this week with Tara Leddy from Alma.

Tennis - Belles Finish Fifth; Gebert, Hurley Earn Honors

E. LANSING, MI – At the season ending MIAA Tournament, the Saint Mary’s tennis team posted a 5-2 victory over Alma in the fifth place match of the consolation bracket. The Belles season ends with a 12-10 record.

The All-Conference awards for regular season play were handed out at the tournament. Camille Gebert, the Belles No. 1 player, earned First-Team honors after posting a 5-3 mark in league matches. Jillian Hurley earned Second-Team accolades as she notched an 8-0 mark at the No. 2 singles spot. It is the first time since the 2005 season two more players from Saint Mary’s earned MIAA honors.

Softball - Saint Mary's, Tri-State Split Doubleheader

NOTRE DAME, IN – In the final doubleheader of the regular season for the Saint Mary’s softball team, the Belles posted a split against Tri-State on Saturday afternoon. Tri-State won the first game with an 8-3 decision but Saint Mary’s came back with an 8-0 five-inning win in the nightcap.

Saint Mary’s ends the regular season with a 23-8 overall record and a 12-4 mark in league games. The 12 league wins represents the most league wins for the Belles who joined the MIAA in 1998. Both teams have already qualified for the MIAA Tournament which begins Thursday at the site of the regular season champion.

Golf - Belles Finish Second at NCAA Qualifier

MARSHALL, MI – In the final round of the MIAA qualifier for the NCAA Golf Championships, Saint Mary’s fired the low round with a team score of 342 but finished the 54-hole event in second place to Olivet who shot a 343 on Saturday afternoon. The final two rounds where played at the Medalist Golf Club on Friday and Saturday.

Of the seven schools that sponsor golf in the MIAA, the team which has the lowest cumulative score after the completion of the three rounds will get the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Olivet tallied a three-round total of 1012 while Saint Mary’s carded a 1034 to finish second overall.

Softball - Belles Take Doubleheader from Kalamazoo

KALAMAZOO, MI – The Saint Mary’s softball team punched their ticket for the MIAA Tournament for the third straight season by sweeping a pair of games from Kalamazoo. Saint Mary’s posted wins of 8-2 and 9-1 in the sweep.

The Belles up their record to 22-7 overall and 11-3 in league games while Kalamazoo falls to 3-23 and 1-13 respectively.

Golf - Saint Mary's Finishes Sixth at IWU Spring Fling

NORMAL, IL – Saint Mary’s fired a team total of 659 to finish tied for sixth at the Illinois Wesleyan Spring Fling which was held at Ironwood Country Club.

Illinois Wesleyan won the event after shooting a 638. Meaghan Brennen of Ohio Northern and Amanda Sanders of Olivet took individual medalist honors as each of them shot a 151.

Tennis - Belles Post Fifth Straight Victory

ALMA, MI – In their final regular season match of the season, Saint Mary’s recoded an 8-1 victory over Alma. It was the fifth straight and sixth win in their last seven matches for the Belles.

Saint Mary’s won all six singles matches in straights sets as they secured the No. 4 seed for the MIAA Tournament which begins Friday morning at Albion College.

Golf - Saint Mary's in Sixth After First Round

NORMAL, IL – In the opening round of the Illinois Wesleyan Spring Fling, Saint Mary’s shot a spring season low 329 as a team. With one round left in the two-day event, the Belles sit in sixth place and 15 team strokes out of the lead. The competition is taking place at Ironwood Country Club.

DePauw leads the event after shooting a 314. Meaghan Brennen of Ohio Northern leads the individual competition after firing a 73 in the opening round.

Tennis - Strong Singles Play Lifts Saint Mary's Past Kalamazoo

NOTRE DAME, IN – Saint Mary’s overcame a slow start in double plays and took five of the six singles matches in posting a 6-3 MIAA win over Kalamazoo on Saturday afternoon. The match was moved inside to the Eck Tennis Center because of rain.

Saint Mary’s won four of their five singles match in straight sets.

Softball - Saint Mary's Takes Doubleheader from Adrian

NOTRE DAME, IN – In an MIAA softball doubleheader, Saint Mary’s posted a pair of wins over Adrian on Saturday afternoon at the SMC Softball field. The Belles tallied wins of 7-2 in the first game and 9-6 in the nightcap.

Saint Mary’s record now stands at 20-7 overall and 9-3 in league games while Adrian moves to 18-6 and 6-6 respectively.

Softball - Belles, Flying Dutch Split Doubleheader

HOLLAND, MI – In an MIAA softball doubleheader, Saint Mary’s and Hope each took a game. Hope won the opener 6-0 but Saint Mary’s came back to win the nightcap 7-5 at Wolters Stadium on the campus of Hope College.

Saint Mary’s record now stands at 18-7 overall and 7-3 in league games while Hope moves to 20-9 and 6-4 respectively.

Swim/Dive - Saint Mary's Announces Coaching Changes

NOTRE DAME, IN – The Saint Mary’s athletic department has announced that Alicia Dombkowski has been promoted to the head coach position of the Belles swimming and diving program.

For each of the past two seasons, Alicia Dombkowski has served as a volunteer assistant under her husband Ryan Dombkowski. Ryan Dombkowski will continue to serve on the coaching staff as well as maintaining his teaching role within the Saint Mary’s biology department.

Tennis - Belles Cruise Past Adrian, 9-0

NOTRE DAME, IN – Saint Mary’s didn’t drop a set in easily knocking off MIAA opponent Adrian 9-0 on Thursday afternoon at the SMC Tennis Courts.

The win lifts the Belles record to 8-9 overall and 3-3 in MIAA play while Adrian falls to 5-12 and 2-6 respectively.

Softball - Belles Pull Out Sweep of Albion

ALBION, MI – The Saint Mary’s softball team took a pair of MIAA games from Albion on Tuesday afternoon. The Belles won the first game 5-2 before taking the nightcap 7-6 in nine innings.

Saint Mary’s ups its record to 16-7 overall and 6-2 in MIAA play while Albion falls to 12-11 and 3-7 respectively.

Tennis - Saint Mary's Takes Out Bethel, 7-2

NOTRE DAME, IN – Saint Mary’s grabbed momentum early by sweeping the double matches in beating cross-county rival Bethel 7-2 in non-conference tennis action at the SMC Tennis Courts.

The win lifts the Belles record 7-9 while Bethel falls to 10-5.

Golf - Belles Finish Second at Vasser Invitational

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY – The Saint Mary’s golf team came up six strokes short in an attempt to win the Vasser Invitational on Sunday afternoon at the Casperkill Golf Course. The Belles finished second with a two-round team total of 691 to finish behind Williams who fired a 685.

The Belles entered the final round of the two-day event 14 shots off the lead but couldn’t quite make up the difference during the final 18 holes.

Tennis - Saint Mary's Overtakes Tri-State, 8-1

NILES, MI – Saint Mary’s dropped just one set in singles play and took two of three in doubles as they posted an 8-1 MIAA tennis victory over Tri-State on Saturday afternoon. The match was moved to Lakeland Athletic Club because of rainy weather.

The win lifts the Belles record to 6-9 and 2-3 in league play while Tri-State falls to 3-9 and 0-6 respectively.

Golf - Belles Place Second in MIAA Qualifier

ANGOLA, IN – In the first of three rounds to determine the NCAA automatic qualifier for the MIAA, the Saint Mary’s golf team fired a 337 to place second behind Olivet who shot a 319 at Zollner golf course on the campus of Tri-State University.

Megan Rimmel, also from Olivet, posted the best individual round with a 74.

Tennis - Hope Grabs Early Momentum in Victory

HOLLAND, MI – Hope swept the doubles matches and used that momentum to carry them to victories in five of the six singles matches to post an 8-1 win over Saint Mary’s in MIAA tennis action at the DeWitt Tennis Center.

The win lifts the Flying Dutch’s record to 9-5 and 1-2 in league play while Saint Mary’s falls to 5-9 and 1-3 respectively.

Softball - Fusaro Named MIAA Player of the Week

NOTRE DAME, IN – Junior catcher Ashley Fusaro has been named the MIAA softball Player of the Week after helping Saint Mary’s to two wins last week. It is the first time in her career she has earned the weekly accolade.

Fusaro (Kalispell, MT/Flathead HS) went 6-for-13 (.462 batting average) at the plate last week with seven RBI’s and five runs scored. Two of her hits went for extra bases as she recorded a double and her first homerun of the year.

Softball - Strong Pitching Leads Bethel to Win

NOTRE DAME, IN – Katie Boocher and Rachel Zirille tossed a two-hitter and struck out four in helping pace Bethel to a 10-1 six inning victory over Saint Mary’s Monday evening at Ivy Field.

Saint Mary’s falls to 15-6 while Bethel goes to 25-5.

Golf - Belles Finish Tied for Third at TSU Invitational

FORT WAYNE, IN – At Brookwood Country Club on Saturday afternoon Saint Mary’s fired a 351 to finish tied for third with St. Francis (IL) during the Tri-State Spring Invitational.

Bethel (IN) won the team event with a 317 while Brooke Gilbert, also from Bethel, carded a 75 to take individual medalist honors.

Softball -- Saint Mary's, Alma Split a Pair

OLIVET, MI – Saint Mary’s and Olivet split a pair of games in an MIAA softball doubleheader on Thursday afternoon. Olivet won the first game 6-5 in 10 innings while Saint Mary’s ended the second game early via the mercy rule with a 10-2 victory.

Saint Mary’s record moves to 14-4 overall and 3-1 in league games while Olivet goes to 6-12 and 1-1 respectively.

Soccer -- Crabbe Hired to Lead Soccer Program

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Saint Mary’s athletic department has hired Ryan Crabbe as the head coach of the Belles soccer program. Crabbe is the first full-time soccer coach at Saint Mary’s.

Previously Crabbe served as the assistant coach at Columbus State University since the 2005 season. During his three years with the Cougars he helped guide them to consecutive Peach Belt tournament championships in 2006 and 2007. In addition to their post-season success, Columbus State won the league’s regular season title during all three seasons he served on head coach Jay Entlich’s staff.
