Alumnae Club Featured Book Club: Houston

On March 3, 2012, five members of the Houston alumnae club met at the home of Jennifer Mooney Stevens '74 to discuss Circling My Mother. Jennifer provided lunch and even decorations related to the book! This was the first book club event hosted by the Houston club and most women were able to relate to the book and enjoyed reading it.  The Club plans to meet and discuss next year's One Book, One Saint Mary's title after it is announced at Reunion.

Alumnae Club Featured Book Club: Cincinnati

Cincinnati Club

How long has the Cincinnati Club Book Club been around?  The book club started at the beginning of 2011.

How often do you meet?  We meet four times a year.

Where do you meet? We find a restaraunt that fits the theme of the book and have dinner together while discussing the reading.

How do you select the books?  We read the "One Book, One Saint Mary's" and for the others, the group decides at the prior meeting.

What have been your favorite books? The Help

How many alums attend the book club meetings? We have 8 alums on average.

Will you be reading Circling My Mother, and if so, when? Yes, we read it for our December 2011 session. Our small group discussion on Circling My Mother centered on the tone of the book. It was difficult for most of us to understand the complex relationship between this mother and daughter and in most cases, we felt deflated by the tone and negative perspective the daughter had of her mother.

Did you read The History of Love Yes.

If you had to pick one book that the club has read that generated the best discussion, what would that be? The History of Love.
